Stamped artwork

As you may recall, we are undergoing renovations (for way too long already). The latest room we've been working on is the dining room. We are almost finished, just need to hang the new ceiling fixture/chandelier and paint the French door white.

Before the renovations started I had an ugly painting hanging on one wall and the rest were bare. Suffice it to say I was not happy with the look. I decided that the long wall needed some picture rails and art work, along with a large clock in the center. I found the clock I liked rather quickly but had a tough time when it came to artwork as I was looking for a specific colour scheme.

I finally gave up looking and figured I'd be happier with something I created myself.
I purchase 8 small (8 x 10") blank canvases at my local Dollarama.
Then I went to my little craft room pulling out various supplies that could help me create some artwork to fill up the picture rails. I found several scrapbook papers in the right colours that would work rather well along with some wonderful foam stamps I had purchased ages ago for scrapbooking and an entire drawer full of Making Memories paints as well as my unused stash of Tim Holtz and Club Scrap stencils.

The first set of canvases (4) were decoupaged with scrapbook papers and set aside overnight to dry.
The next day I chose several foam stamps with scroll/flourish designs and using brown paint stamped the images onto the decopage canvases. I also added a word to each canvas using large foam letter stamps. Once the paint was dry I finished the canvas edge by wrapping it with some natural coloured jute scoring the ends with a bit of glue form a glue gun.

The four remaining canvases were painted using acrylic paints in similar colours as the decoupage scrapbook papers. Once dry I used my stash of stencils to paint random designs in coordinating colours. I am honestly not 100% happy with two of them, although my daughter stated they look fine in the finished grouping.

I think the paintings turned out rather nice and my investment, other than what I already had in my stash, was a whole $8 for the canvases. I consider this project a success and think in future  I may again dig into my craft stash to create some home décor.

You've got the World by a String

I have one more Balloon card to share, well for now anyway.
This is a bit of a different colour pallet, softer, neutral tones and a lot of beige/taupe colours.
I quite like how it turned out.

For the card front I stamped various texture images randomly around the edge to create a border and finished the edges with sponged ink. The balloons were stamped on a scrap piece of cardstock and then punched out with the balloon punch. They were attached to the card front with foam mounting squares/tape.

The card front was attached to the card base with foam tape as well and I finished it with a few randomly placed rhinestones in various sizes.

Timeless Textures Hello

This is another relatively fast and easy card using the Timeless Textures set for the background.
I used several of the stamps to create a simple background border framing my greeting.

I added a few pearls at the top and some sheer ribbon in a coordinating colour at the bottom.
Then matted on a coordinating colour of card ( created by sponging the edges of white with ink).

The card front was mounted with foam tape onto my base for a little added dimension.

Just for you

It's time for me to try out my new SU stamps set. They have sat around in their box for far too long already. My fingers have been itching to play with the new Timeless Textures set for  while. love the different distressed textures. They are just so very versatile.

I started with a simple card using the different textures in layers to create a lovely sort of frame for my greeting.

I don't often use coloured cardstock as I do no ave too many colours on hand these days. This card is also just white. I inked the edges of my mat to match the sentiment perfectly. The card front was hen mounted onto my base with foam tap for a little added dimension. I also couldn't resist and used a few little rhinestones for a touch of sparkle.

Bird Crazy Celebrate

I really enjoyed making this card. To me this crazy little bird looks like he is wearing a tuxedo; wherefore he was perfect for a celebration themed card.

I stamped the bird as well as the top hat and bow tie on watercolor paper and coloured all using SU inks and an aqua painter. Then the pieces were cut out using the matching dies.

The assembled bird was matted on an oval cut out and I add a little shading below him for a shadow effect.  The card front is very dark navy cardstock onto which I stamped a crackle background in pearlescent white.

 

For my finishing touches I couldn't resist and had to add a bit of sparkly thread and sequins

Frosty Winter Woods

One of my favourite artists is Robert Bateman. I particularly love his "Artic Wolf" and "Midnight Black Wolf".  Not sure if you've seen the latter (it should come up if you Google it). It is a forest scene at night with a wolf image hidden in the center. Having this image in mind I wanted to try and create something similar with the woodland embossing folder. But alas no matter how hard I tried I could not make it work well with the only wolf stamp set I own, SU's- Wolf stamps. If I ever come across a more suited stamp I may just purchase it and give this idea another try, but for now I decided to use the same principal and make a winter scene.

The background was inked directly onto the embossing folder in Soft Sky. Then I added the deer in Chocolate Chip and embossed my white cardstock. The snow drift is a torn piece of white attached with foam tape. I inked the edges of the front panel in Chocolate chip before attaching my ribbon.

Autumn Birch Trees

Behind our house we have a green belt going up the hill. It is a place were people can walk their dogs (off-leash if they like). The hills is scattered with wild grasses and several groupings of birch trees. One group of trees is right behind our house. Looking out my kitchen window as the sun set the beautiful birch trees almost looked like were on fire with their pretty golden leaves shinning brightly in the setting sun.

With this image in mind I made this pretty card.

I used the foliage stamp from Sheltering tree to stamp light green and golden leaves directly onto my embossing folder before I embossed the cardstock. I also added sparkly gold sequins to mimic the bright reflecting sunlight. The little bird is perched on a branch cut from the Tim Holtz branch tree die and placed in front of the embossed trees. I clipped a few "slits" into it to simulate the birch bark design.

Shabby Chic Best Thoughts

I am slowly trying to make my way through all the new stamps I purchased in the past 3 months which I still have not used (after all, I have got to be able to justify buying several of the amazing sets in SU's new Holiday mini).

On the docket for this week is SU's Hostess set Best Thoughts. I love this beautiful large flower image. It is perfect for colouring with Copics, which was my plan. However after looking at it for a while I thought before I go the colouring's route I would try a simple embossed image.

The results were this very shabby chic looking card. Although not my usual style I am really pleased with how it turned out.

I am also pleased with how many old products I managed to make good use off.

I started by stamping the post card image on ivory cardstock. I then trimmed it and distressed the edges. The entire layer was then sprayed with a little walnut stain.

Next I stamped several grungy splatters in pink and green. I also stamped some random writing and my "Hello" greeting.

The postage stamp image was stamped on a scrap piece of ivory and then punched out using the SU stamp punch.

The white paper doily was distressed with Walnut stain and a small scrap of doily was sponged with pink ink.

The flower image was stamped with Versamark on dark brown cardstock and embossed with Verdigris embossing powder. The image was then fussy cut and attached with foam tape for a ltitle added depth.

My card base is light ivory. The edges were sponged with pink and a few walnut ink smudges.
I also added a little pink colour to the cotton bow and the 2c portion of the stamp image with markers.

Last but not least I added a few small pearls for a little touch of chic.

Watercolor wings over-sized card

After playing a little with these gorgeous butterflies I thought they would be best served on a  larger canvas than normal, so opted for a 5.5 x 8.5 (A7) card. This size really allows for great flow without the card seeming too overcrowded.

I used different shades of purple for these butterflies. To be honest I tried several different combinations to see which blended the best, this is why the butterflies are different colours. Still nto sure which I like best.
The top one consists of Rich Razzleberry, Blackberry Bliss and Elegant Eggplant. The Bottom butterfly is Wisteria Wonder, Perfect Plum and Blackberry Bliss. Each butterfly is trimmed with a row of 5 rhinestones that I coloured with alcohol markers to match.

You've Got This

Not wishing to delay my much anticipated playtime with some of SU's new 2015-2016 catty products I of course placed an orders on June 2nd for my most wanted items. Wednesday I stalked my UPS man (he was late; arrived at 7:30 PM).
Having finally received these wonderful new goodies I had a tough time picking what to use first.

Thank goodness Michael's came to the rescue. They had another 30% off entire purchase coupon on Friday and Saturday, as well as a one item at 40% off coupon. I had no choice, I needed to go and buy some more Copic markers.
This narrowed by choice of projects down to outline stamps and You've Got this moved up to first spot.

My first colour choice was a mix of peach and green tones. I opted for black ink for the outline.

After colouring my image I also added a subtle shadow on the right side (my first try at this). Then masked my flower and stamped the background.

As I have many colours of organza ribbon on hand, it was easy to match the peach tone. Not so for the pearls. I therefore used my Copic marker to colour them in the darkest matching shade.

Layered flower card

I have noticed that as of late I seem to be reaching for this stamps set more and more. The flowers are all lovely to colour and work for so many occasions. It is a very versatile set and to top it off it was also a free hostess set.

This time I decided on a layered look. I also used several of my old Club Scrap stamps that re-surfaced during my clean up.

  

I stamped the blossom three times; once on the card front, and twice on white scrap. The image on the card front was coloured in gray. The next image in darker orange only and the top with my three orange tones Copic.  Each layer was attached with foam mounting squares. The stem and top leaf are only two layers each; the bottom leaf is a single layer. I did stamp it on a scrap piece and then cut it out and adhered to the card front after colouring.

Silhouette Sunset

I bought the Inspired by Nature two piece stamp set a while back on eBay (long time retired) as I've always wanted it and missed out when it was a current SU product.
When I first got it I unmounted both stamps from their wooden blocks, replace the foam with EZmount and put the stamps aside. 

I have come to realize that it is a rather common occurrence that I forget exactly what I own, despite having an itemized inventory list.so common. So these lovely stamps have been sitting in my ignored pile ever since.

This past weekend I pulled them out and told myself it was time to sue them, at least once. I decides on this fast and easy card.

I do wish the black had come out a bit bolder. I considered re-stamping it a second time but knew I wouldn't be able to line it up exactly so left it as is. Just another reason why a MISTI is on my wish list, and slowly but surely moving towards the top.

For the sunset background I used Work of Art. Very fast and easy and great results. I mounted my image on a black mat, a mere 1/16"all around just to have a slight contrast from the card front. I added my ribbon and bow before adhering it to the card front.

The sentiment was stamped directly onto my card and trimmed out with very small 3/16" rhinestones.

Welcome Spring Window Card

We have had some very unusually mild weather here in Calgary in the past few weeks. It's making me very hopeful for spring (all though I am afraid to rock the boat so to speak).

That in mind I felt inspired to make something that said "spring". I've been seeing a lot of cards made using the new SU stamps et "Indescribable Gift". It is a lovely spring blossom branch that can be coloured with markers. I don't own it yet but thought I'd create something with spring blossoms.

This is what I came up with (I bet it would look even prettier with the SU stamp):

I don't have any blendabilities (or other alcohol marker). I used my regular SU markers to try an shade the blossoms a little. In actual fact I was not too happy with the results and almost threw the coloured image away when my daughter advised she loved it and would like a card made with it.

So this little gem was born. I do love the window die and think it works really well with this image.

I Love Ewe

When my daughter was little she was a big fan of the TV show Lamb Chop's Play Along (and that darn never ending song - This is the song that never end..., sorry to those that know it and now have it playing in their head, repeatedly).

Birdhouse Christmas Wishes

Today I have another note tag punch creation. As I am still working on a few more Christmas cards I used this design for a Christmas theme, but it would also work well on most other cards.

I added a pretty cardinal to the top of my birdhouse, but it looks just as cute on it's own.

 

The cardinal uses old instructions I posted here last year. The only change is that I added a second wing in behind.

Christmas Lanterns

I am almost at the end of my "Note Tag" creations. Today I have a wonderful trio of lanterns to share.
I added a bit of greenery and a bow and used them on some Christmas cards, but they could have many different uses.

I used the same basic design and identical supplies for each of the three cards.

First I stamped my music background on white cardstock. Then I cut the banner shapes. I generously inked the edges and sponged all over with So Saffron for an "aged paper" effect. The lanterns have been mounted on the large shape from the Apothecary Acccent dies which was embossed with stars and also inked with So Saffron. I used my Punch Bunch pine twig punch for the greenery but the Martha Stewart punch or any pine twig die would work just as well. Instructions for the little 3-d bow are also below.
Note that some parts of the punch art lanterns could easily be hand cut or cut using a paper trimmer. But I cut all parts with my note tag punch. After having played with that punch for so long I found this easier and faster.

Bird Bath Punch Art

This design came about while I was trying to make candle holders (upcoming project).
As I was putting together the various shapes I'd punched I realized this could easily be turned into a bird bath (and a water fountain) as well and these two pretty and serene designs were born.

First a closer look at the bird bath version.

 

This is a 5.5 x5.5" card. I first stamped the floral background then die cut my shape. Next I stamped the bird image, sponged on some colour and cut out just the bird. I assembled my punch art bird birth; then stampes it with the crackle texture. I added some shading with my daubers, inked all edges of my cardstock pieces and assembled the card front.

And here is my second creation - a water fountain - using the same punh art design. 

 

This is a large 5.5 x 8.25" card. I first embossed a white piece of card 5.25 x 8" in size with the brick texture. Then cut the arch opening as well as the actual archway (2nd piece of card) using my Coluzzle. I hand cut 5 semi triangular stones. All pieces were sponged and inked along the edges. Next I created my punch art fountain. The base is made of 2 strips approx. 1/4" wide. The top one I angled the ends and the bottom one I rounded the corners using my note tag punch. I then stamped the crackle pattern, added shading and then stamped the moss texture to all pieces using my Lovely as a Tree stamp. I used this same stamp to create the greenery on my blue background. I also sponged the blue card with a little Marina Mist for a little texture. The water swirls were stamped with Versamark and clear embossed. I then assembled the archway. The stones on the arch were foam mounted, and then I again used foam squares to attach the arch over the background. The bushes are the tops of the tree stamp. I hand trimmed them and attached with additional foam squares on either side of the entry way.

Mantel Clock Punch Art

I have another quick little punch art card using the new Note Tag punch from SU.
This time I've made a little mantel clock. You can add details to it using small border stamps, or border punch pieces as I did. I hand drew the clock face, but if you happen to have a stamp around 3/4" to 1 1/4" in size that would work wonderfully.

I used a border punch to create a little carved details on my clock. You can see what the full punch shape looks like on the right hand side of my card. It is made by Punch Bunch (PB) and is called "Crown border". PB is closing down but you should still be able to find this border punch for purchase online. I used a nailhead circle frame (old stash) to secure the clock face, but you could just mount the 12" circle on top of a 1 1/4" circle for a framed look. The face and 2nd layer of the clock or foam mounted.to create more depth. I also foam mounted my greeting.

This is just a thought, but could see how this mantel clock design can easily be turned into a grandfather clock for a scrapbook page border by adding a long piece with a door between the bottom of the clock and the curved foot/base.

Thanks a Latte

I have a quick post to share before calling it a night. This one is a fast and simple one inspired by my beer mug. You may not have much use for a beer mug/ice cream float but don't write off that basic design just yet. A hot beverage like coffee, tea or hot cocoa can be featured on many different cards for various occassions.

 

And this is very fast and simple as it requires only one punch. For the hot steam you can use a die like I did, a stamp or hand draw some swirls.

 

Supplies used:

Cardstock: Bazzill

Ink: Chocolate Chip, Early Espresso, Marina Mist - all SU, pearl white - Club Scrap

Stamps: Hello Doily - SU, Latte Love - Fiskars

Dies: Apothecary Accents - SU, Flourish 11 - Sizzix

Punch: Large Lace - SU

Embossing folder: Devine Swirls - Cuttlebug - Provocraft

Misc.: foam mounting sqaures, white gel pen, 4 - 1/4"black rhinestones
